Car failed MOT

I put my car in for its MOT on Thursday and it failed. The main reason it failed was down to a lot of corrosion to the back axle which means that although it still has the old MOT certificate, the mechanic advised that it should not be driven until it was repaired so it is still sitting at the garage tonight.
The repair estimate was way over the value of the car so I have pretty much decided to scrap it. Having never done anything like this before I am not sure how to go about it though. Can anyone give me detailed instructions on what steps I have to take to do this?

Take it to an independent welder to get an assessment first. Might be able to get it done cheaper
But to scrap a car basically phone around local scrap merchants and ask how much they pay. They will say £100 per tonne or something similar, then ask them about standard deductions. Some will deduct say £20 for disposing of tyres and fluids etc.
Also ask them how to bring the car in, do they want you to check in at reception first, or drive straight onto the weigh bridge.
I'd use google street view to check places out first. Find a professional looking place where they have some kind of sign for where you go.
Depending on what time you get there, there might be a queue outside. But you can walk in and say "i've got a car to scrap" and they will ask for V5 etc and then tell you to drive it onto the weigh bridge. You just park it on there, leave the keys inside usually but turn off the engine. Then go into the recption or kiosk and they will tell you the weight of the car and give you the paperwork.
Take your V5 with you, plus some ID. They will pay via BACS. Get a receipt and ask for a Vehicle Destruction Certificate.
Obviously empty out everything from the car before you go, including all your tools and top up fluids or spare wipers etc. Take out the radio if it works, they won't want it.
Take the bus home
The other option is to phone someone who does free car collections, but then you don't get any cash. Usually you get £100 if you do a drive inChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -

Scrapped a car earlier this year (https://www.cartakeback.com) and en route, heard a rattle from the back.
Brain kicked in, remembered trolly jack. As the breaker was 30 miles from home and I was getting back by train, I hid it in a bush at the side of the road and recovered it later that day.0 -
As above get a 2nd opinion from someone that can weld. It maybe minor, But it could be a lot worse than it first appears.
Stick it on ebay with the failure sheet and someone will buy it.
Is replacing the axle a cheaper job?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Dont think scrap is that good at the minute so stick it on eBay or local Facebook selling site and you may get good money for it.
If its a desireable car/spec, what are the parts worth on their own? does it have fancy alloys with good tyres? Does it have leather? Have you got room, time and inclination to strip it? Could end up getting a decent chunk of monet for it in parts.0 -
Also depends on two other things:
how the car has been so far
what else it has failed on
If it's been a good car, unless you foresee any big bills then spending money on it may not be that bad of a decision. Better the devil you know and all that rubbish.
A new crossmember from a breakers yard and fitting won't come massivley cheap but should be cheaper than replacing most cars0 -
What type of car, what age, what other MOT fails and how much does it currently owe you. Big difference if this is a collectors P6 or a thowaway Saxo.0

Would any scrap merchant be able to take the car? I had read that you have to take it to an Authorised Treatment Facility if you scrap it?0

Google scrap car (insert your location) to find plenty of local dealers (some will come and collect if you want)0
