Contribution Based JSA

Options
Hi all,

Just a quick question. I have been made redundant and the only thing I will be able to claim is contribution based jsa as my partner works. Do I have to claim this as soon as I become redundant? I have savings for a few months and would rather not claim if I don't need to. Can I make a claim in say 4 months time if I haven't found a job? Or does it need to be made at the time of redundancy?

Thanks

I would have thought it would make sense to apply immediately assuming you are job seeking
If your "spend" is £100 per week and you get a job after 20 weeks
apply straight away, JSA for the full 20 weeks meaning impact on savings = -£538
wait 16 weeks and then claim, impact on savings = -£1,707
I would have thought it better to keep as much of the savings intact

I have reasons that I would prefer not to make a claim straight away. I work in a specialised field so would like time to look for a suitable job, rather than be pushed into any job. Also my partner is expecting shortly and is rather be around for the birth than working a job that isn't what I am looking for long term. Obviously if it takes me a bit longer to find something then I would like to make a claim and take any available job.

You can make the claim whenever you chose. It is normal where someone has worked for some time in a particular field to be able to restrict your jobsearch to that field for a period of time, usually 13 weeks but maybe different if its particularly niche. Its called a permitted period, more here:
