The web address of the Gardening board has now been changed from https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/greenfingered-moneysaving to https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/gardening so that it is in line with the board's current name. Don't worry though, the old address will still redirect you here, but it's worth updating it in your saved links or browser favourites.

more reasons to try and grow your own

was watching countryfile last night, and was shocked, that they spray fields ( in certain parts of the country) with glue, to stop the fine soil blowing away... but they also use the same stuff in cavity wall insulation!!!!

Yeah, but no... it's probably a cellulose product made from plant material in the first place, similar to the cellulose mulch fabrics that can also be used to cover early crops, which then rots down into the soil. Better than plastics or spun fibres IMO.

And it's marginal land, which would otherwise blow away like the Tennessee Dustbowl of the 1930s, as it's pretty dry in East Anglia, compared with over here in the west. Look at those huge conifer windbreaks they had!

I'm on sandy soil here. All around me, farmers grow grain, but they don't just rely on artificial inputs. There's a rotation with beans or other green manures being ploughed in every so often to maintain soil structure, or on the grassland there is a huge amount of muck spreading. So, coupled with silage, it's a real smell-fest in these parts.

    We don't notice though!:rotfl:
