Unfair Vehicle Tax card charges petition.

New Car Tax fees for credit + debit card processing are ridiculously high. Up to £14.50

To pay by credit/debit card for 6mths Tax Disc is an additional £7.25 and considering you are paying this twice it would total a whooping £14.50 in additional fees.

This is especially unbelievable as in 2014 I believe the new rules on fair processing fees should have come into full effect

The only option to avoid the fees is to either pay by Direct Debit which I find dubious as to why they would want a direct debit set-up for an annual or bi-annual payment.

Spread the word and sign this petition.

Where have you got this figure from? I renewed my VED less than a month ago and was charged a flat £2.50 fee for paying by card to renew it for 12 months.
This equates to around 1.7% when in band E, lower if you're in F-M.

Edit: Further clarity - This £2.50 fee is for paying by credit card, there was no fee to pay by debit card.

Edit 2: Explanation from the DVLA on their flat £2.50 (not £7.25 or £14.50) fee for credit cards from the horse's mouth, at:

You sure you havent used one of the "scam" sites that take your money to input the same data into the official site for you?

Would also make sense that they arent adding anything for DD as they wouldnt be able to set up one into their account to skim a profit.

Renewed our car tax online last year and paid by debit card. Extra cost was zero.
Maybe the OP was sucked into a site that looked official but makes its money by adding a fee...

Edit: Don't think there will be many petition signatories. ;)

As everyone else has said, paid by debit card, no extra charge.

Whilst a scam site is likely, I wonder if the OP's getting confused expecting 6mo to be half the price of 12mo?

There's always been a 10% hike for buying 6mo tax - as of the tail end of last year, when DD paying was introduced, it was reduced to 5%. You don't go to the supermarket and expect four solo tins of beans to cost the same as a four pack, do you?

Taxed one yesterday using a cc on the DVLA site and the fee is still £2.50. It's hardly excessive and to me was worth the hassle of not queuing in the post office.

I don't understand where the OP got his figures from at all.

We need him/her to come back with more info.

No there is a 3rd option, pay the annual fee in one go using your debit card, no additional charges.

There is a 10% loading (as there always was) for paying one off 6 months by debit card (or cash) but only 5% for one off 6 mths by DD so they are in fact penalising you for paying 6 mths by any method other than DD.
