Do I have to tell Mortgage company I was bankrupt?

My partner and I are currently looking to buy our first property and are looking for a mortgage. I declared myself bankrupt 9 years ago and one bank have already declined us for a mortgage as I told them about my bankruptcy when they asked then question "have you ever been bankrupt".
So my question is, do I HAVE to be as honest as I was? Can I lie? I don't like to lie, but if it gets me a mortgage I will. As it was so long ago, can they even find out that I ever was bankrupt?
Many Thanks

Your bankruptcy entry in the London Gazette is there forever.
It takes less than 5 minutes to find you on there.

So it is up to you.If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -
Yes you do have to be honest with everything on application form. We had to provide proof of discharge. We were able to go with a high street lender and went in to speak to them to explain before application. Do your research before applying by looking at lending criteria. Also make sure your credit files are in order. Good luck0
