Eligibility checker advice...

Hi all

I am looking for some advice and it seems this is the best place! My partner and I share a credit card (in his name) and it has reached the end of the 0% period, we are looking into doing a balance transfer but as his credit report is not squeaky clean I am a little hesitant.

I have read all the advice possible on credit cards/credit reports/building credit available on moneysavingexpert and have made sure he has no unused accounts, is on electoral register etc as advised. However we done an eligibility check and the results for the decent cards came back as strong chance 70%. To me 70% feels like quite a risk still and was just wondering whether anyone had been accepted with the same result as we don't want to apply, get rejected and make another mark on the credit report.

Thank you in advance.... and sorry for the long winded-ness! :)

I find the MSE Eligibility Checker a hit and miss most of the time. I've applied for cards that it says I'm not eligible for and been accepted, but likewise applied for cards that it stated I had an excellent chance of getting, but was subsequently declined.

From my experience, it's much better to use the credit card companies 'soft search' instead. Barclaycard, Fluid, MBNA and Nationwide all have this feature, and will tell you how likely you are to be accepted before running a full credit check.

  • Do what TheEffect has said.

Just in case you didn't know, you can't BT between two cards from the same provider (i.e. BarclayCard to BarclayCard).
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.
