Some Gumtree Advice Please

Hiya all,
I would appreciate some advice on this,
I sold something on Gumtree, I requested collection only but the buyer wanted to do via postage, he paid for the item via bank transfer and it was no problem. I posted the item but due to an issue with Myhermes ( they admitted fault and said they had sent to wrong place ) I agreed to send him a refund for the amount in question £250 - I got my item redelivered back to me.
He sent his payment details but his account details had one too few digits on it so it does not work on my online banking
Since then I have emailed the buyer 6 times over the last 2 weeks but have yet to have had a response, I have no other contact for him other than his address.
I have spoken to Gumtree and they have told me on online chat ( I have a copy ) to wait until the buyer gets back to me and keep a note of the ref that I have spoken to them. I suggested sending a cheque but they have stated not to do that and to just sit and wait
My issue with this is that if the problem is down to an email issue then I could wait forever and not get a response from him so I am still believing sending a recorded letter with a cheque would be the best option
I was wondering if anyone could advise as to whether you feel I should follow my instincts and send a cheque to his address with a cover letter saying I have been unable to get hold of him ( by recorded delivery ) or whether I should follow Gumtrees advice and just sit and wait
I suppose if I waited for 7 days ( incase he was on holiday ) before sending letter?

So far you seem to have done as much as would be expected in law.
I would keep the funds separate if you can, or ear-marked and wait for the buyer to get back in touch. Have you tried his details on google, it may uncover a social media account, BT telephone number or 192 search result.0 -
Thanks,
Yeah I have tried that but not had any success with it as of yet

I would send a recorded delivery letter without a cheque and keep the funds separately until he replies with correct bank details as he may be away for Christmas etcStuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland
