Sainsbury's credit card - payment rejected

Hi everyone,

In panic mode at the moment! I am very attentive at paying off my credit cards/bills and have never been late on anything before...

On the 31st Dec I made a bank transfer to pay off my Sainsbury's credit card (never used this method before, followed the instructions on my bill). Looked at my Current Account statement this morning and it has a line for it being rejected, called Natwest (who owns my current account) and they stated that Sainsbury's rejected it for incomplete information - though I followed their instructions. Unfortunately I cannot call Sainsbury's at the moment because they are closed.

I went and used the WorldPay from their online banking system so that there was at least a payment going through at some point...! But this might not clear in time for the "pay by" date of 06/01/15.

Not really sure what to do here - neither Natwest nor Sainsbury's informed me that they'd rejected the payment so I would not have known if I hadn't have looked, it is only chance that I found out today and not after the payment date.

What are the repercussions of the WorldPay not clearing until on or after the pay by date? I feel it would be quite unfair for Sainsbury's to financially penalise me when they've rejected a payment and not told me why. How much of a grace period is there before the CRA are informed? I checked last month's statement and the WorldPay transfers have a date for when they were made and cleared on the statement - would this be sufficient for paying on time, even if it doesn't clear until the 6th?

I've read around a bit and all the information I can find is on people who pay after the due by date.

Many thanks in advance!

Having a panic at the moment. I don't envisage taking out credit in the immediate future but do not want a blemish anywhere - especially as we'll probably take out a much bigger mortgage than the current one when the right house comes along!
