Elephant racing

We have had middle lane hogging, so we must have elephant racing. Something which I hate far more. Lorries constantly overtaking each other, when they are limited to 55mph and they might only be going a couple of mph faster than the lorry they are overtaking.

On a four lane stretch, there was three lane elephant racing, with all the cars forced into the outside lane, and the motorway grinding to halt.

At least in busy periods, lorries should be restricted to one lane.

What should they do when the truck in front is carrying a heavier load and the road starts to incline?
You'd have a whole lane grind to a halt......
Do you have any idea how much fuel a HGV uses JUST to getting moving from a standing start?
Would you be happy when you go shopping and the shops are empty because the delivery trucks are stuck in grid lock lane 50 miles away?

HGVs are the life blood of our transport infrastructure....

Oh please, if the lorry in front is doing 50 mph, and they are doing 56. They can drop their speed, and save a bit of fuel. The shops are not going to be empty, because lorries are slightly slower.

I don't think that non commercial motorists lifes are going to be adversely affected too much if they have to wait for 30 seconds to a minute for the overtake to complete either now you mention it.

They could also saving a bit of fuel traveling at the slower speed.

Until you've driven a vehicle limited to a slow speed you won't understand.
Why don't you slow down and sit behind these lorries too, save fuel?
Save fuel? Miss a deadline, more wages, miss planned spot for tacho break, not make good progress, annoy other lorry drivers, increase the speed differential between lorries and cars, be even slower up the next hill, get a bollocking from the boss for poncing along, have customers waiting getting annoyed.
But main thing is you get where you're going with no issues :)

Without speed limiters most lorries will do 70-80 quite easily on the flat, but they're limited so 56 at most it is - unless you've a 90's volvo.
  • Middle lane hogging is illegal and unnecessary.

Lorry overtakes are the legal lesser of two evils (the other being not to fit speed limiters to lorries at all).

Where it causes a problem (a problem being serious congestion; not the impatience of an impotent Vauxhall Insignia driver) legal restrictions on vehicles above a certain weight overtaking may be imposed (e.g. a stretch of the A42, Leics).

I do drive one every day & I don't see why there has to be a 2 mile overtake holding everyone up.
The guy overtaking is clearly quicker so why not back off a couple mph & let him past? That's what I do & it costs me maybe 10 seconds...not many deadlines are gonna be affected are they?

It comes down to obstinate muppets sat with the cruise on the limiter refusing to budge no matter what... knock it down a couple of clicks !!!!!!!

I do back off if they're struggling and there's cars behind them, is no hardship.

    I didn't mean you personally...was just a general comment :)

    Fair do's :)
If there's no cars behind I leave them out there, overtaking when there's 0.1k's speed difference is pointless, otherwise back off.
Some find it funny having a 10 minute overtake, wouldn't find it so funny if they were in a car behind of course..

An annoying thing is a number of vans limited to 56 too.
I think they should all differ by 1mph, say vans 56, rigids 55, artics 54, or something like that.
