New Buyer - no feedback - payment glitch

An item I had for sale was bought by a 'NEW' buyer who lives in Sweden (even though I had stated no overseas buyers !!).
She has now come back to me with the following email

"Hello,
We tried to transfer the money to you, however without success. Neither our Visa nor our MasterCard was accepted. is it poosible for you to send us our bank account number so we can transfer the money directly to you.

Here are our contact information:"

I'm a bit wary about giving out those details - what do others think?

    It does sound very suspicious.

If it's a con, the next stage might be that they 'transfer too much to your account by mistake', and ask you to return the excess by Western Union.

(And after you've returned the excess, the original payment then gets reversed by the banks, because it was fraudulent.)
  • Thanks for that eddddy - must be totally naive because that didn't occur to me!!

Have wondered just 'how' they have tried to use visa and mastercards - do they mean by setting up a paypal account?? can't think of any other way they could have tried - and why would paypal refuse them??

Think I am going to have to 'write this one off' and then relist at another time
  • It's possible that they are trying to pay you by a bank transfer (iban & very common in Europe) if your unsure what this is you can usually find your Iban number on a bank statement. Such cash payments may take a few days (5??) but are guaranteed and can not be charged back.

Bank transfer is much safer for a seller than PayPal.
