accommodation in Colchester, Essex.

Hi all,

am new to this thread, so if this is not the rigth place for this post, pelase do tell me and i will remove it.

My OH has just finished his PhD and got a post in Colchester, Essex. He has been offered a non stipendary post as a researcher with the University of Essex on Wivenhoe campus.

We are currently hunting for a single room for him in Essex. He will be there only during term time. the room preferrable close to Wivenhoe campus, although this is not a pre requisite as he will get a bike.

we are both new to Essex, so has anyone got any tips for us?

Hi! I live in a village about 10 miles from Colchester! I know lots of the students live in Greenstead as rooms are cheap there, but I know most locals wouldn't go near the area! I've got a couple of friends who are students at the university so I can ask them if they know of any sites/estate agents that may be able to help him if you like?

Anywhere in the Greenstead, Long Ridge, Hythe or Wivenhoe area, are all within biking/walking distance of the Uni.

Pricewise, prob cheapest on Greenstead, but as said above, its classed as the roughest estate in Colchester, but i have friends who live there, and find it ok. i suppose it depends on what you are used to.

If he is looking for a room in a house-share, then prob best to get a copy of the local paper (Evening Gazette), or look in local shop windows. the newsagents in the old part of wivenhoe often has ads for rentals.

prob best to visit the town, and have a drive around to see what areas you like. if he doesnt mind a bit of a bike ride, then the western side of colchester, tends to be a fairly popular area. prob about 1/2hr bike ride from the Uni (alot quicker than trying to get across town in a car in the rushhour too)

Any reason why, are you not coming too, and only making this a term-time move?

    Thanks for the reply, guys.

hb21: thanks for the offer. It would be great if you could ask around on our behalf. He doesnt mind the size of the room, so long as it can contain a bed and a desk. (hopefully not on top of each other):rotfl: :rotfl: am looking for something cheap-ish. :o:o

flea72: thanks for the advice. it is greatly appreciated. i will not be going to colchester as i will need to be in Reading for studies.; will need to be here in the next couple of months. hope to get a job somewhere in london, so i'll get to see him more often. am hoping that he will get a term time only accommodation as he is not required to be in the uni during vacations, we are trying to save some money. :o ( he is not paid for the post in essex)
