OS Christmas Eve party food

Hello:santa2:
I am having my in-laws round for lunch on Christmas eve. This will mean I have 5 adults and 5 children to feed. I could buy party food ready made but I don't mind putting the effort in myself partly in order to save money. It won't be a sit down lunch as I don't have a big enough table so it will need to be buffet type food.
I was going to do baked potatoes with various fillings but my DH thought that was very unfestive so it's back to the drawing board. Does anyone have any ideas please?

TBH, why not do jackets - a lot less work for you with a busy day after. Or is hubby going to be in the kitchen on Christmas Day making lunch?!
And folk might be glad of a lighter/less rich meal before the indulgence of Christmas Day.
If you did chilli/bolognaise for a hot filling, and things like coronation chicken or tuna mayo for cold fillings then it's a bit more fancy than cheese and beans.
You could serve mince pies, stollen, yule log etc as pud which is festive. Give everyone a cracker and stick on some christmas music.

I would get a few french sticks and serve with a variety of cheeses, pates (fish and meat), cold cuts, chutneys and pickles etc with fresh fruit alongside.
This would be inexpensive, easy to do and always goes down well0 -
How about making some quiches, and have those with jacket potatoes and salads, maybe some sausage rolls, baguettes and cheeses, crisps and then a selection of puds.0

A big lasagne can be inexpensive to make. Some garlic bread and salad on the side. A mushroom risotto type of thing too if you want a veggie option. Doesn't need special rice and could also be done in the oven.
Not very festive but tasty.
Have a great time whatever you decide.0 -
I do the same the day before Christmas Eve - and have done for as long as I can remember with 7 adults and 7 kids to feed. I have experimented with different meals over the years but have to say the traditional buffet is always popular, most of it is easy to do and enjoyable to make if you have the time.
Agree with all the suggestions so far, just keep to simple things you are used to making. And this side of Christmas most people aren't sick of sausage rolls and the like just yet!
Another suggestion if you do decide to do a hot meal is do 2 sittings. Feed the kids round the table first then let them clear off and play while the adults sit to the table and have theirs.0 -
How about making a big pot of homemade chilli con carne? Served with rice and then offer the nachos, dips and sour cream too? You could also make up some garlic bread to go with it, and do some hot dogs for any kids who don't like chilli. Pudding could be a homemade trifle, mince pies or a chocolate yule log.
Sit the kids around a table, and then the adults can help themselves to bits and eat wherever. We used to do this type of meal on New Years eve and it always was a hit :-)0 -
If I was hosting it would be pork pie, sausage rolls, cheese biscuits, cheese board, piccalilli, ham.
Which, funnily enoughis what me and OH will have when we get home from work. If you want OS Christmas is for feasting.

Buffet every time!
....and for the children (to eat...and for them to make if they are your children)....
'Toadstools'....hardboil some eggs and cut them in half, stand them on the cut flat side....halve some tomatoes and scoop out the pulp (save it for soups et.c)...place a half tomato on top of each egg half and then blob on some mayo/salad cream to make them look like flycap toadstools!
Top-hat biscuits....take a rich tea biscuit, using some icing sugar/water mix as glue stick a marshmallow in the middle...(if you like you can then add another blob of icing glue and stick on a chocolate button or some sprinkles.
And don't forget the cheese/pineapple and cheese/onion hedgehogs!0 -
Why not do twice baked jacket pots? Just scoop out the middles mash with butter and cheese and mix in spring onions, pile back in shells and bake.
Bake a ham joint at the same time and slice up. Make a big bowl of salad. Coleslaw, some corn on the cobs and some chicken drumsticks baked with piri piri. A big pizza topped with your own toppings. Something for everyone and easy to do.0
