Cleaning walls...

I just wondered if anyone had any tips for cleaning walls. The bathroom wall/ceiling has a hint of mould, and the kitchen walls seem a bit grubby. I have newly bought soda crystals and white vinegar, but I don't want to take the paint off! Thanks...

  • Laughing, because I've just spent the evening sugar-soaping walls! It's very effective as a cleaner, even if you don't want to paint the walls; several times I've sugar-soaped then rinsed my kitchen walls & then decided I didn't need to paint them after all.

  • I'm not entirely sure what sugar soaping is...

:) Another raving fan of sugar soap. It's what pro decorators use for prep. And your prep; actual painting ratio should be about 5:1 or you just ain't prepping properly.

In recent years they've started selling pre-dissolved sugar soap, which is a real waste of money, buy the powdered stuff.

Where you have a mould issue, I'd go for a proprietory mould-killing product as it's a living organism and needs to be killed, and it isn't much dissuaded by sugar soap/ hot soapy water/ bleach. HTH.

  • I too use sugar soap and its amazing how much grot it gets off the walls. You have to do this anyway before you paint, and a good anti mould remover (wear rubber gloves though) works wonders
