My advice to stretch is based on a long term outlook. If you hold on to a property for 10 years or more then prices may peak and trough but the general trend will be to increase. Which is why I suggested not to sell but rent it out when you can no longer live in the area.

If you do this and convert the mortgage you then have it paid for by the tenant (keep it mortgaged for tax relief) and you use your earned income for the next house you want to buy.

You can do this as many times as you like, as you get re-posted to different areas. Build a portfolio. Well I don't see why not anyway.

Then when you retire you can decide whether you want to live in one of the houses you own, or sell up and move elsewhere, you give yourself all the choices
