Paying bills with a credit card?

Can you pay bills with a credit card? If so does it count as purchases or as cash advance? Also is this the same for all card providers?
Specifically I want to pay an online catalogue bill not because I am struggling to meet repayments but because I have had customer relations issues and would like to sever ties with them asap.
If it would count as purchase I was thinking to get separate credit card with 0% interest for at least 1 year. Is this the best option for me?

Which catalogue? You need to read the "how to pay" info on the back of your statement.
I paid off a Very account using a CC. It did not count as a cash advance.
ETA: They did not charge a fee either.0 -
Some catalogue companies will charge you a fee if you pay a bill by credit card0

I would have thought contacting them requesting your account is closed with immediate effect would be the best way to sever ties.
You would, of course, need to pay off all money owed before they would close the account, but they'll take you through the options available if you don't already know.
If a credit card is acceptable to them, it will be treated by the card provider as a purchase, not a cash advance.0 -
Thanks all for the advice it has been very useful and has shown me the way forward.0
