Car accident - can I do anything?

Hi all, my car was parked up in a street as I was staying at a friends just over a week ago. Came out to a note on my windscreen and some scratches and a dent in the side of my car.

The note was from a guy admitting responsibility as he had to swerve to avoid another car and he left his first name and landline phone number. Called him that night and all was fine, again admitted responsibility and said he'd be happy to sort in anyway. I suggested getting some quotes as the damage isn't too major and settling outside of insurance and he was happy with that. We then met in person the next night so he could have a look at the car in the daylight. He said his car had next to nothing wrong with it but he could see mine needed a bit of work doing to it so he agreed to proceed with me getting three quotes and then calling him back in about a week with the details.

I've now tried to call him for the past two days on the landline and am getting no answer - eventually left an answering machine this morning. But I'm a bit foolish as I don't have his full name, address, insurance details, car details etc etc - all I have is his firstname and landline number. He doesn't have any details of mine other than my first name, phone number and I guess he's seen my car.... If he continues not to answer, is there anything I can do or am I stumped with only a first name and landline number - can he be traced....? :(

  • Police won't be interested in this.

No other way of tracing him.

All you can do is keep calling, but in reality, if his excuse was that he had to swerve to avoid the antics of another motorist, your claim against him is flawed as you may not be able to prove negligence (which is what is needed in the event the claim became contested or his insurers became involved).

This may be one where in the long run, you have to suck it up.

He may be away for a few days- I wouldn't panic too much at this stage.
  • I agree the chances of the police being interested is tiny but there is a small chance so if its worth the hassle you could report it.

When you met up in person how did he arrive? Guess you didnt think to get his reg number then?

Balls in his court, if he doesnt want to answer his phone ever again then he can just ignore you. There is a chance he's just gone away and isnt avoiding you but time will tell on that front

    Oh. I see.

I just thought that the police might be able to source the name, address from the landline number?

Of course he might be away etc, I am a natural worrier! - I'm just planning for Plan B if required.

He walked up - he lives five minutes walk away he said, mentioned roughly where but didn't say exactly where.

You've only just left him one answer phone message this morning? Sounds like you're panicking over nothing. I rarely answer my landline during the day as I'm at work.

next time you call him, block your number from caller ID.

So just one evening? Perhaps he went out and didnt get back until late? Would you have wanted him to call you at 2am as he rolled in from the pub?
