In my experience some sites require you to register/log in before you can enter a comp; with others there might be the facility to do so, but it's not mandatory. Guardian's a little complicated because you've never been forced to register/log in to the "general" comps. pages in order to enter. If you do log in and you share your computer with another person or family member, as I do, I try to check that it's showing my username right at the top of the page and not my wife's. If it's my wife's I just log her out. Probably not necessary but if I remember to do it I'd rather avoid any confusion. As I say though you can certainly enter without logging in.

The Guardian Extra site on the other hand requires you to register, then log in, in order to enter a competition - or it certainly did when I joined ages ago. Unlike the Sun however which makes you subscribe and pay to register and enter comps. it costs nothing at all to register with Guardian Extra.
