What happens to phone line when moving into new home?

Hi,

I'm a FTB and have been reading up on what happens on move in day. I am aware that I pick up the bill with the existing utility supplier until changing / renewing. Council tax I apply for at the Council. But.. havn't been able to find much information on phone line.

Setting up Broadband is going to be high on the priority list, do I need to register as a customer without a phone line, or does the incumbent supplier automatically charge me line rental in the same way as a utility company does?

  • I would think is usual for seller to cancel phone line and you have to start from scratch and phone up a phone provider and broadband provider and get connected. You will prob be without both for a short while when you move in, unless you take a chance and organize before you move in and get installation date for just after. We did this with phone, bb, and tv and moved in ffri and all sorted by the following Tues.

You should get an indication as to what the owners intend to do on the property information form your solicitor should send you. Our's wanted to take their number with them as they were staying in the neighbourhood and once they had organised this we could apply to take over the line. It was then simple as we intended to stay with BT (and they got it right!).
  • Thanks both. I'll check in with the seller on this point. :)

Yes make sure the seller disconnect their line on the correct date. If you are using the same provider, eg BT then hopefully they will just be able to turn your line back on without a visit. If the line has been disconnected a while they sometimes have to do an engineer visit.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
