Wallflowers offered last week on MSE

I have now received the Wallflowers purchased from last week's email 'offer' from Jersey, and I wonder whether others are as disappointed as I am by the quality of the plants, and the response from the company selling them? (They were also trashed in the post.)
Their response when I complained about the under-sized, hairs-breath-thin plants, was to tell me they had been advertised as available from July -and that it was now well beyond the season for such purchases - which rather begs the question about why they were offering them only a week ago as a special offer on MSE...

I have potted up what I have managed to resurrect, two to a module in the hope that I can salvage some at least, and hope they will last the winter, though I am not hopeful.

  • Just to say that the supplier Jersey Plants tells me by email that my purchase has now been refunded in full, so that's something. Will still report on whether the tiny scraps of greenery I resurrected do 'pick up' and make it through the winter.

These weren't an offer from MSE though, were they?

The offer may have been reported by MSE, but it would have carried no recommendation of the product, just as the recent Vax sale code carried no implication that Vax are a good manufacturer of vacuum cleaners.

Unlike vacuum cleaners, where there is uniformity of product, plants are variable, and especially with the seasonal varieties grown in high volume. There is probably much temptation for the sellers (usually middle men) to carry on selling too long.

I'm not saying never buy plants via mail order, as I buy all my bare root trees that way, but I know exactly who I'm buying from, I deal direct with the producer and that's the key to good service whenever plants are involved.

Any other way is a lottery.

My experience was identical. The plants were tiny, looked unhealthy, and I'd certainly have not picked them up on the reduced counter of Wilkos etc. However I was also been given a refund, without having to return them. I haven't been put off Jersey Plants Direct, but I now understand that just because something is highlighted on MSE weekly email, it is no indication of quality.
