Bit confused about the new car tax rules

I know cars don't come with tax disks anymore so I have a quick query regarding car tax when buying a car please.....
Scenario, I find a car I like on a second-hand forecourt agree a price and pay for it there and then, I phone my insurance company and arrange cover but what do I do now?
If I take a laptop can I go straight onto the DVLA website and tax the car because my insurance details will be immediately available online for them to check or don't you need proof of insurance in order to tax cars now or is there some kind of grace period that will allow me to drive the car for say 7 days until the insurance details get registered with the DVLA so I can tax it?
I'm finding the new rules a bit confusing and I suspect I'm going to have to buy a new car in the next couple of months because mine is getting very sick

You don't have to produce insurance to tax a car now.0

Phone the insurance and tax it before you drive away.
Dont forget it will probably show as uninsured and untaxed so more risk of getting stopped for a check.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
