Improvising

I want to make a steak suet pudding this weekend. However I do not possess a pudding bowl or any means of getting one. What could I use instead to cook the pudding in? I don't mind it coming out an unusual shape.

I also want to make a jam roly poly at some point, do I have to buy a pudding cloth (and where do they come from), or can I use say a clean and non-fluffy tea towel?

    Hi Chai,

You can make it in any bowl thats oven safe - I've used a glass pyrex jug before now.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

  • With the tea towel, try and find a white one, don't use one with red stripes as the colour may come out. Ask me how I know ? :)

Thanks! I'm not sure if I've got any oven safe bowls, I have one bowl that I'm not sure about so I'll look for markings. Then if that one might not be ok I don't know, might see what else is in the shops I could use. Such as a pyrex jug!

I've also got a loaf tin, might that work?

If the filling is already cooked, a (metal?) loaf tin should be fine - you may want to have gravy on hand in case the filling doesn't cook evenly. the dough should be fine though. you'll need to be careful covering it evenly to let it rise.

    i wouldn't use a silicone one.

  • They used pudding cloths in Victorian times so a clean tea towel would do, i believe you have to wet the cloth and then sprinkle it with flour thereby creating a seal, tie at both ends and steam or boil.

I put suet pudings in the oven and they do just as well.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Update - had an idea and made the pudding in a giant mug. It worked really well, I'm basically a genius.

I'm also sooo full right now. Can't even manage dessert, most unlike me.

What other ways do/have people improvised when cooking and how did it work out?

I used to make bacon & onion roly poly and just wrap it in a double layer of foil with a pleat in it. DH and the DDs loved it.

Haven't made one since the kids left home and that was about 20 years ago, LOL!
