MOT is all that's checked at the time of buying the tax.

When you buy the tax, state that you're the new keeper.

And, yes, it will be effective 1st Oct. I don't know if they've changed the old situation where you used to be able to buy in advance two working days before the end of the month, coming off SORN. If so, then holding off collection until Weds will give you a month's extra tax.

So I should be able to tax the car tomorrow online on my phone as long as I have insured it first? Sorry if I'm being a bit slow.
As others have said, the online system checks the car has an MOT.

DVLA check that you've insured the car on an ongoing basis, not just at the time you buy the tax, so its not checked as part of the tax transaction.

Just as well, because some insurers can take a few days to appear on askmid.

As this is a money saving site I guess I should mention that you'll be paying for tax for all Oct even though you're only using 4 days of it.

So if you wait till Sat you'll get an extra month to be able to use. Obviously if it's a long drive to get there then the cost of petrol will outweigh the tax saving.
    Why is that relevant?

    Am I missing something?

If it is a long drive, he will have to pay for petrol anyway and petrol will cost much the same on Saturday as it does today.
