Waste Not, Want Not - what have you reused/recycled today?

I'm trying to reduce my food waste to peelings and scraps.

I thought I'd start a thread for people to share their daily/weekly wastage, tips for reuse and general place to keep track of savings.

Today I used up:

Food:
1/2 of a 2-week old giant butternut squash
The last week-old bread roll (they last over a week from my local bakery!)
3 2-week old carrots
Last handful of frozen blueberries

Household items:
Leftover wadding from quilt making and an old pair of pj bottoms to make a draught excluder

  • An old warn out duvet has been used to make a draught excluder ( and even with my limited sewing skills it looks quite good just a bit of leftover fabric and an otherwise redundant duvet.)

I blitzed the stale bread to freeze for breadcrumbs and someone had knocked a pkt of crisps behind the other things and they were crushed so I sprinkled them on the top of the fish pie before it came out of the oven.

    Food:

I finished off the apple crumble (made on Friday with apples that had been given to us by someone who had several trees in their garden)

Added the pasta that the kids left on their plates to the dog's dishes = less dog food needed

    Household:

I've sorted some kid-sized coathangers out that are now too small and offered them for free on a local facebook site.

Used all left over veggies, pasta sauce and dough for a pizza.

I fed washed eggshells and the end of HM rye bread back to the chooks.

This is a great thread idea. It's definitely got me thinking!!
  • I took the box and large sack back to my neighbour in the hope that they'll soon be full again of joinery off-cuts for my stove. He also came round with some bamboo canes cut from his garden, so my beans will be growing _very_ tall next year! The bits of wood are great for a quick, high temperature burn to take the chill off, and excellent kindling too.
  • We have a combi boiler so when running the water and waiting for it to come through warm, I save all the water in empty 4 pint milk bottles and then use the water for filling the kettle, filling the dogs water bowl and for cooking if needed, I usually get about 12 pints before any warm water comes through!

I do loads of batch cooking so weekday teas all come out the freezer and take minutes to reheat, great for coming in from work.

I saved all the freezer bags from last weeks meals and washed them all out tonight while doing the dishes. Once dry they'll be reused when I do next lot of batch cooking.
  • I recycled a vacuum cleaner, it was too heavy for me to lug around, hubby bought me a lighter one, I passed my old one on to a friend.

I took leftovers for my lunch, I freeze any leftovers to save making/buying lunch.
    Chin up, Titus out.
  • Yesterday:
*Sorted a few drawers in prep for xmas pressie "hiding" space & found some old brown paper in our packing stash...covered it in ds and dds hand prints (red and green) ready to use for xmas wrap for granny, aunties/uncles etc. :)

*Last 3 mushrooms & few (very soft!) cherry toms & last of some cooked sausage (used for pizza Sat eve and in omelettes Sun eve) became part of breakfast with a couple of eggs.

*All bottle tops (milk, squash, juice cartons, cider for hubby, milton bottle etc.) are collected and taken to our local childminder (she uses them for counters and buttons in all kinds of things).

*Old crate placed in the garden in the ever developing mud kitchen along with lots of good stirring sticks and log slices which make great plates. :)

I've been chopping apples up this morning, had loads of them when i pruned the trees (2), and they've started to go soft so i'm cutting all the best bits and cooking them before going in the freezer. The plastic bags i'm portioning them up into are, the zip-up bags that cheese came in.
