Smelly damp carpet

A few days ago I realised there was a slow leak from a pipe at the back of the toilet. I only noticed because I saw the mildew on the carpet
(clean water leak, I hasten to add)
The fault is fixed, and we've been using a small heater in there to dry it out.
It's right at the back, in a downstairs bathroom. So far there isn't an obvious mark, but there's a definite whiff about the place.
Any tips for getting the smell out of the carpet? Am I remembering right that bicarbonate of soda will do that?

As it's in a bathroom is it possible to take up the carpet and hang it outside, or over a banister, to air it? It would also give the floor underneath a chance to air. Baking soda can be sprinkled on and left for several hours, it soaks up smells. Give the carpet a thorough vacuum or brush afterwards and keep the window open so the room airs thoroughly.0

A steamer would be best if you can get hold of one. (test a small patch first)0

Thanks. Its not properly dried out yet, I'm airing it as much as possible - but I don't think the whole thing will come up unfortunately.
I was thinking about getting a steamer or something anyway, as a couple of weeks ago I managed to throw a whole cup of coffee over the floor (on top of an extension lead, while doing the ironing - one for the 'things not to do' thread!').
Not had a great couple of weeks really0 -
rip it out and vinyl / tile it.0

I'd pull it up and lay vinyl. Carpet around a toilet isn't very hygienic, especially if there are any males in the house.0

the smell will go as it dries.. I had a leaky cistern a few weeks ago and have vinyl down and the floorboards got wet and smelly until they fully dried.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

I'd love to rip it up, I agree its not very hygienic - unfortunately that's the landlords decision.
It's good to know it'll eventually disappear pigpen, it's been a week now and I was losing hope!0
