Please help -combi microwave oven

I've just bought one of these as my microwave broke and I thought this would be a good cost effective idea as I live on my own and don't really need to use the big oven a lot.

So far I am finding this OK but the problem I am having is when I do something in the oven and then something else which is part of the same meal in the microwave, how do I keep the first lot of food warm whilst the other is cooking? Before I would do say my fishcakes in the oven and put the steamed veg in the microwave once the fishcakes were nearly done and they would be keeping warm in the oven whereas now I am using the same device for both things so I find it difficult keeping stuff warm.

Does anyone else have this problem? Do you find the combi microwaves useful?

What about keeping the fish cakes (for example) covered with a tea towel or some foil then giving them two minutes microwaving whilst you dish up veg and make a drink? They should stay pretty warm if the plate is warm so I should think if you're only steaming for 3-5 mins it shouldn't be a big problem? Do you cook them on the plate?

I've made do with a combi microwave since we moved in here (3 years ago now!) and it is one thing I miss (as well as a decent grill feature, or the space to do a whole tray of cupcakes!). I try to do things on the hob, where possible, e.g. heating beans, but sometimes I wish I had a separate microwave to ping things quickly while stuff is still cooking!

Timing helps too. Could you not time it so the steamed veggies are done closer to the time the fishcakes are done, and keep them warm in the steamer?

Otherwise, I find if I use the rack on the higher setting (the height you have it for grill mode) and stick food in a tray on the bottom of the combi microwave, covered in foil, the food on the rack gets the brunt of the heat so the bottom tray doesn't overheat, just stays warm.

One of the problems that I found was wanting to pop plastic microvave steamers etc in when the oven is still hot from the convection heating! I use pyrex jugs and casseroles now. As previously suggested, lids or foil covers can also be used in convection mode.
