ebay ripoff fees

  • The fees are very easy to work out. There are NO hidden charges.

You might consider if you have the right type of Paypal account, that could reduce charges further. As for businesses, there are discounts depending on the status of your account.

Ebay don't have a monopoly. They aren't forcing you to sell there.

So why doesn't ebay simply take the fees out of the selling price straight away, instead of waiting for a month to deduct them? Then people would see exactly how much they are making?

Why does ebay force sellers to offer paypal, and then double dip on fees? It is the same organisation, since everyone has to use it, why not combine the fee totals?

How can a percentage of postage be justified? All it does is force up postage costs.

    1) so you want your debit or credit card charged immediately on a successful sale? What happens if buyer doesn't pay or you need to refund a few days down the line?

    2) I can't see sellers being happy o pay. PayPal fees on the few transactions where PayPal isn't used, just to keep things 'simple'. PayPal like most merchant charge you when a transaction is made, not before when a guesstimate is all they can work from.

    3) the postage charge malarkey was done to death a year or two ago, they don't have to justify it, their site their rules.

Amazon take the fees upfront. Amazon charge fees on postage too. Amazon force sellers to use their payment system. Guess what? Amazon's fees are, on average, the same as Ebay, sometimes works out more, sometimes a little less.

    Even worse:

"eBay paid just £620,000 in corporation tax on sales of more than £1billion last year, its latest accounts show."
A used car dealer talking tax morals. I love the irony;)

  • OK, sorry it is not absolutely related to this thread but eBay is doing a Starbucks and Amazon with their tax bill and that is somewhat related.

I have not seen or heard of any mass action being instigated by anyone in relation to this story which emerged this week. eBay, because they are registered in a foreign country (Luxembourg I think) means they can fiddle their accounts so as to pay minimal tax in the UK. All legal and above board but totally immoral in my view.

I hope Martin will get going again as he was very effective with the Starbucks' tax issues. I for one have cancelled my eBay membership, my loss perhaps, but I feel better for it and my local charity shops will benefit from my offerings!

Are used car dealers well known for channeling their profits through not one, but 2 tax havens just to deprive the UK taxpayers of income?

So you have always paid all taxes and never employed an accountant to advise how best to minimise tax paid?

I asked on another thread about the complications of how Ebay works, is an item sold on Ebay UK by a seller based in China to a customer in Iceland, should the UK government get tax on that?

Ebay sell across Europe, so being based in Luxembourg is not such a big deal. Unlike Amazon and Starbucks, Eby sell no physical products at all from within the UK.

Having a problem with companies with dubious tax payments is all very well, if the companies are doing it legally then you need to look to the government as the ones you have a problem with. Governments have always done 'deals' with big companies to pay less tax and give tax incentives, in the knowledge that they help the economy in other ways.

Using the Daily Mail as a moral compass is a bit like using Sooty as your spokesman;)

So taxes are just for the little people?

Multibillion $$ companies are right to use all manner of ruses to deprive the good people of the UK of tax revenue for vital services.

At least we know where you stand when it comes to defending this country.

I'm happy to be in the patriot camp, you it seems, are a traitor?

Do you ever read anything, or do you just read the odd word and then post drivel in response?
Are you happy to have a government that doesn't do anything to ensure that the wealthiest companies and individuals pay all the tax they should?
