Disappearing debt

Hi. My hubby just rang 2 creditors to set up pay plans and they told him got sent back to the original companies and they have said we couldn't get in contact with him so just wiped th debt. Does this sound right. One of them he hasn't been in contact for a while but the other he has defiantly been paying in the last year.
