Pilot Theatre, Derby Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East bring a contemporary telling of Sophocles’ classic story to Northern Stage. This Greek tragedy, written in 441BC, highlights the plight of rulers desperate to gain control over a city ravaged by civil war. Antigone’s uncle, and the official ruler of Thebes, is Creon. He refuses to bury the body of her rebellious brother whom he perceived a traitor. Outraged, Antigone defies his order. Creon condemns his niece to be buried alive, but hesitates, and instead orders her to be sealed inside a cave while he mulls over his decision. But in doing so seals his own fate.
