EU car Licence / UK bike

I wonder if anyone can help me with a question on EU licences.
I have an Irish B licence for a car, and owing to EU regulation I am under no obligation to exchange it for a UK one until it runs out.
Now I want to go and do my motorcycle test in the UK, as it would be quite hard to get enough time in Ireland.

There are three options then as far as I'm aware.

First off is to exchange for UK licence. I have no desire to exchange my Irish Licence for a UK one for two reasons.
1. Why should I pay £50 for the privilage
2. 3pts that will be added onto any new Uk licence I get for a speeding ticket months back (fine paid).

Second off, I have heard of the form D9 which enables you to apply for a GB counterpart to an EU licence. Questions on this are: Will my 3pts appear on this; and more importantly will I be able to do a bike test or will it just show as a provisional?

Thirdly, apply for a new UK provisional and go through the bike process, which would leave me with an Irish B licence and a UK A licence. Now I know you cannot have 2 EU licences, but that could apply to 2 licences for the same category?

Does anyone have any experience of going through this sort of process? I imagine its the same if you came from anywhere in the EU and wanted to add any category to your licence (van, truck, etc). Are there any other options availabe?
The way I see it, the second option gives me the benifits of the first without forking out £50? But it is of no value if I can't pass my bike test.

Thanks for all help, I would just like to get on and learn to ride!

Can you post a link to where it says you can't have more than one EU Driving Licence.

If you have an EU licence, and get points, they create a "shadow" record for you at DVLA, and add the points to that. If you have a UK licence, then - obviously - the points will be added to that instead.

If you want bike entitlement on your Irish licence, take your bike test in Ireland.

You're taking the micky. You want to learn to ride a motorbike, but want to do it on the cheap and without accepting your three points.

    Seems legit.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • If you just have your Irish licence, your points will go on a shadow licence allocated to you, you will still get points that are as solid in the UK as they would be on a UK licence.

Your choice, you are living mainly in the UK so you need to decide whether you are permanent and want the advantages and disadvantages.

Put another way, the cost of going back to Ireland will be way more than £50, so sorting your problem out for just £50 is a bargain.

Do not assume that you can switch licences to avoid showing how many points you have though, they will be linked.

No need to exchange the licence before taking your bike test.
Take the test and if you pass, you can send in the pass certificate (after taking a photocopy in case DVLA lose it) and your licence and pay just the one fee rather than paying twice (once for exchnage and once to add motorcycle entitlement).
    Never Knowingly Understood.

I wouldn't really be worrying about the cost of adding a motorcycle entitlement to a licence seeing as it is free.
