Charge for Oil - car service
Just had a 24k mile service and was a little surprised to say the least at the charge for £87.95 for oil.
I can't remember the exact type but it was Castrol, and I don't recall the bill saying added gold leaf.
Is this the going rate for "main dealer" oil, and does anyone actually provide their own oil to dealers when they have a service - or is that an elf & safety issue and prohibited?
Car is a Volvo V40 D3 engine.

Synthetic oil is expensive.
I supply my own (correct spec) oil when I have my car serviced. It knocks around £120 off the bill.0 -
Seems exactly right to me.
You engine needs 5.9 litres of oil I think.
Castrol Edge 0W-30 A3/B5 which is probably what they have used is £12 a litre if you buy it in Asda when it's on special offer.
You can get oil which might meet the Volvo specification at half the price from Halfords but it'll be an unknown brand.
Just like budget tyres there will be folks chipping in soon saying just buy what is cheapest, and oil is all the same from the same refineries etc. etc.
I use Castrol Edge and have oil-change intervals of approx 15K0 -
Check the receipt does it say 1L x 5 or 6 ? Where they charge you an inflated price similar to buying 1L bottles when a 5L costs about the same as 2 or 3 L?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Even supplying known brand or manufacturers own brand oil, the savings can be significant. I save around £75 on 10L.
It only really works if your car needs multiples of 5 litres at a time though, or near. Having to buy 1 litre containers to make up the required amount will reduce the saving considerably.0 -

Yes, I had this once. According to the bill, they had used 15 half litre bottles.0 -
Seems quite high to me. We're £7.50 per litre for our highest spec oil and that meets the spec required for the high end executive cars and vans. (Indy garage based in Scotland).0

This is not a car that wants cheap oil.

That's a good deal from Opie - but it still doesn't match Asda at £12 a litre for Castrol Edge.0 -
Yep the edge sounds familar although I will check the invoice when I get hold of it again. Thanks for the replies - at least I am not getting royally ripped off.
I have a feeling it just says n litres of oil rather than "1x5l" + "1x1l". They certainly didn't offer me any leftovers in a doily bag.0 -
and doesn't match Wilco's 10W40 semi-synth 5 litres for £15 meets MB spec.0
