Advice about debt management (collector)

Hi
I have recently been getting calls from a debt collection company (BTW, or BTC) :pand haven't answered. I checked my credit report and have seen a default for activ capital for £503 dating back to 2011. My question is this do I answer? What do I say? I am a student and already live on the bare minimum. I have no family to borrow the money from. If I pay does the default stay for another 6/7 years? If I don't pay or answer for next 3/4 years does it become statute barred and drop off my credit report if so it seems stupid to answer or pay.. Or will they enforce a CCJ.. It's obvious they don't have my address but have my mobile number. I'm confused by misinformation and just want to do the best/right thing.

AFAIK, what matters is that they are chasing you, not whether you reply or not.

Yes, but the status has to change to 'settled'.
If I don't pay or answer for next 3/4 years does it become statute barred and drop off my credit report. if so it seems stupid to answer or pay..
AFAIK, it will drop, but doesn't become statue barred if they keep chasing you.
Or will they enforce a CCJ..
CCJ is a possiblility, but unlikely for such small amount.

The best or right thing for whom?

The "best" thing for you may be to avoid paying, the best thing for them & the right thing is probably that you pay what you owe, even if by long term payment plan.

A debt would become statute barred after 6 years from the point that you last acknowledged the debt (that could be a payment made or an admission of some other kind that you owe it) unless they have previously taken court action to recover it.

They will be unable to pursue a CCJ against you until they can provide your address to the Court. If they trace and pursue you for the debt you may incur further costs. Once they have a CCJ they will be able to seek to enforce it regardless of whether or not the 6 years have then elapsed

    Not true I'm afraid.

They can serve the paperwork, at your last known address.

Hence why so many people get CCJ`s awarded against them, and they know nothing about them !!
