Help my 3 years old has worked out how to turn the taps on on my 3 waterbutts :o

I have told her no and this has made her more determined to turn them on.

If there such a thing as a tap lock? If not how else can I stop her pouring my valued water down the garden path?
Fat and proud lol

Can you not fashion a cover for the tap out of a small water bottle? Not full-proof but it might take a while for her to workout and with a bit of luck she'll give up!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

try and turn it around so that its hard for her to get to the tap. thats what i had to do when my son kicked a football at the but and broke the tap off and all the water went everywhere. new tap and lots of sealant used to repair.

Depends on the tap but if you have one with a hose connector you could fit a short length of hose with one of the non return valves/connectors on the wrong end (i.e. you'd normally put it on the tap end to stop water siphoning back into the house supply from the hose but if you put it on the other end of a foot (or less) of hose she can turn the tap on but nothing will come out.) When you want to use the water you just remove the hose and carry on as normal. Obviously doesn't work for the standard cheapo taps that come with the butts normally.

The other option is to get some chain (bath plug chain will do) and a cheap padlock - fix one end of the chain to the wall. Make a hole in the tap handle and use that to padlock it in position. Again how effective it is will depend on the exact design of the tap and butt.

  • I bought a connector from B&Q so I could fit my hose connector to it. At the other end of the hose I have an waterstop attachment into which I plug in my spray or other attachments. So even if the tap is switched on no water will flow unless there's an attachment or the collar of the waterstop in pulled back. Should be enough to confuse a 3year old :D

A good slap on the hands should do the trick.
