Desperate for advice on debt

RedCola

We are in a lot of debt & now it has finally all come down on us.
We have been receiving letters & today I had one from ross & Roberts saying they have a court order to seize goods.
Have no idea what to do or where to start. I wish I hadnt ignored for so long. I found it too hard to deal with (I have anxiety & on/off depression)
I need to get on top of this all now. Where do I start?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
First of all I would start by trying to build up a list of your debts and what stage they are at (e.g. up to date/with debt collectors/gone to court etc). Hopefully you can build this up from letters you have received.
The one with a court order you need to tackle straight away. Was this letter giving you notice of them visiting? Do you know what debt this relates to? Is it for council tax or for something else.
Once you have tackled the immediate problem of this debt then you need to be looking at a plan to deal with all of your debts. A good starting point it to work out in detail what income you have coming in, what outgoings before debt repayments and therefore how much you have left a month to put towards your debts.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Ok, the letter is as follows:
This notice is important and can save you £235.00
Dear RedCola,
We have enclosed a notice of Enforcement because you have not paid money that you owe to **** **** Council in relation to outstanding Council Tax. An order has been issued against you through the Courts, which authorises us to take control of your goods in respect of the unpaid amount.
Full information is displayed on the Enclosed Notice of Enforcement including our contact details & any potential further charges, which may be applied. Currently the above charge has not been applied, the total outstanding balance of £909.23 must be paid. However we will consider at this stage for you to enter into a short term arrangement plan. Should you ignore this Notice, your case will be passed to an Enforcement Agent, in accordance with the Taking Control of Goods Regulations 2013, who will visit your property during the hours of 6am- 9pm, on any day of the week.
Details of how to pay are below and given on the enclose Notice of Enforcement.0 -
I have 2 letters, exactly the same, except the other is for £417.26
The council is a previous address of ours, not who we pay to currently.0 -
If there are 2 letters and 2 amounts then likely there are 2 liability orders for different years.
I would look here as a starting point - https://www.nationaldebtline.org/EW/factsheets/Pages/02%20EW%20Council%20tax%20recovery/Default.aspxA smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Thank you. So regarding that debt, I can make an offer to the council & start to it off whether or not they accept?0
-
I had the same with these a couple years ago and they allowed me to pay it off at £150 a month over 8 months which is what I could afford at the time. I am sure they will accept a reasonable offer as it is in all parties interests to get the matter resolved.
I called their office in Taunton and managed to defer one payment by a month after I was off sick from work.0 -
How much other debt do you have? Are you making the normal payments to it? Or no payments? Or are you in a debt management plan?
Council tax arrears are a priority debt and you may need to reduce what you pay to other debts so you can clear these arrears more quickly.
If your total debt problem is impossible, it may be better to look at insolvency options that would get rid of the council tax debt as well as your other debts..
Could you say if you are renting or buying?0 -
I have a lot of other debt. Am currently making no payments towards it. Am not in a debt management plan.
We are renting.0 -
I just dont know where to start. It all feels like such a mess0

It does, but it isn't going to go away, so you have to do it tiny bits at a time.
Pop a list on here of all the money, who it is to, the interest rates, and what stage it is at (ie the court order needs addressing first).
Then the next step will become more obvious.
Do you have a list of everything?0
