Just had a look on the site, could not see a reference to any grace period still.

I did, and looked for the part reffering to the grace period, that's the part no one seems to be showing me the actual quote that refers to it, just a link to a page.

It's not exactly a large document to look through, but here's a copy and paste of the relevant bit...

    Current law
Section 33 of the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 provides a five working days waiver on the requirement to display a vehicle's tax disc, when registered vehicle keepers have applied for a tax disc ahead of their existing disc's expiry or ahead of a statutory off-road notification for their vehicle expiring.

    Proposed revisions
Legislation will be introduced in Finance Bill 2013 to remove the five working days waiver and replace it with a 14 day waiver that applies to all situations in which tax discs must be displayed except for the first issue of a trade licence tax disc. Defunct references to annual off-the-road declarations will also be removed, consistent with the deregulatory policy of once only indefinite declaration.

And the actual legal stuff is here: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2013/29/section/188/enacted

If the licence is renewed on-line or by [STRIKE]post[/STRIKE] phone, on or before the expiry of the old one, there is 14 days grace period for the offence of failing to display.
    Corrected ;)

Link I posted very clearly states:

If the licence is renewed on-line or by post, by any method, and the application has been received on or before the expiry of the old one, there is 14 days grace period for the offence of failing to display.

Just renewed the tax disc online. It was quite easy to renew just with the V5C document reference number. Have the confirmation email with the reference number stating it will take 5 working days for the disc to arrive by post, by which time we would have left. So wouldn't have the chance to actually display the ticket. However it would be ready when we come back and it looks like we would still be within the grace period of the current law to display it.
