Is there an easy way to find out which charities spend most on the good causes they promote? Or do I just have to read the accounts on th Charity Commission's website?
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Rule of thumb I always go by.
Branded Charity = 95% on admin and fundraising leaving 5% for the actual cause.
Branded charities such as Oxfam, RSPCA, NSPCC, Cancer Research etc
For donations, stick with smaller, local charities and your money is more likely to be used for what you intend.0 -
Most charities will publish a breakdown of what they spend on things like admin, advertising and actual causes. Their annual reports are also informative.Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.0
