Ignore Moorcrap. Write to them to tell them the account is in dispute and to naff off.

Not for a utility debt no, usually only consumer debt such as creditcards, loans etc.

I am with Yorkshire Water and I have had near enough the exact same problem as the OP. I don't know about Southern Water, but YW do indeed mar your credit report, and I know that first-hand :(

Thank you OP for giving me the idea of contacting the landlord we moved to afterwards! I was originally going down the route of getting proof of us moving out of the first property (the one in dispute for us) but the landlords are terribly dodgy and approaching their 28 day limit of not providing us with a tenancy agreement.

£20 will get you all the data that Southern Water have on you and all the data that the bank have on you via a Subject Access Request made under the Data Protection Act (£10 each).

With that data you should be able to put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

And with that data you should be able to mount a coherent complaint and dispute with Southern Water. In writing.

Unless you do that, I have a feeling this may end badly.

Not forgetting to include in the complaint the explicit request for the £20 fees you've incurred getting the subject access, plus potentially a small £x for your time sorting their mess out.
