About to lose all my No Cliams Discount (not insured car for nearly 3 years) - Help

Hi it's been nearly 3 years since I have had a car insureance policy under my own name, in a couple of months time I will lose all my no claims due to not having vaild insurance for the periodon my own name etc. I generally hire cars when I need them.

I have my own car that I have had sorn off the road for the last 3 years, my question is if i take out an insurance policy for my car that I have sorn and insurance it for a year however then cancel the policy within 14 days will this renew my no cliams discount for another 3 years? Or will I have to insure the car for the whole year, I'm tinking out getting rid of the car within the 14 day's cooling off period, and then buy a car in the early part of next year. I don't really want the insurance complanies to take a massive cut of the insurance policy after the 14 day cooling off period however as you can understand I don't want to start off again next year with 0% ncd.

Any ideas help? Cheers

The most obvious thing to begin with is that most insurers will not accept NCD that has not been active on a policy for over 2 years, so if it has not been active for nearly 3 years you will most likely have to start from scratch regardless.

You would have to have insurance on the car for a whole 12 months to get 1 yr NCD. Even if the car was insured for a few months before the policy was cancelled you would not get that years NCD.

You can get insurance policies that allow 3 year gap, the issue here is not about getting another years NCD it is about sustaning the bonus all ready built... Therefore if one was to obtain insurance for a short period be it only a week would the "new" the exsisting bonus built up....

Check out the various comparison sites and then take a look at Quidco.com

If you've been driving for some years and have built up a decent bonus you should be able to get a decent price.

Just done a quick check against my own details. Group 11, TPF&T, <1000 mpa, garaged, not protected or legal. £152.25 with £120 back = 62p per week.

Take a few years on that to pay the no claims bonus you'll lose.

So if I get insurance for a short period of time will that be suffient to retain my bonus I've buit up or do I have take out a policy for a whole year to retain my NCD?

I don't think taking out an insurance policy & then cancelling it will help you retain your NCD. I changed car insurance companies this year & was required to supply proof of my NCD, which in my case was my original copy (....no photocopy permitted) of my renewal notice from my previous insurance company. How would you be able to prove your NCD?

You need a YEARS COVER to claim a YEARS NCD.

If you are REALLY concerned about losing your NCD then go through Quidco and take TPFT with nominal mileage, as above.

The cost is negligible, especially compared with losing your NCD, and the car is covered if it were to get nicked.

If you took out a policy & then cancelled it within 14 days then u wouldn't be sent a proof of NCB as you wouldn't have been with the company long enough - if u asked them for one they would probably tell u to use the one u had off your previous insurer. No claims bonus generally has a shelf life of 2yrs with most insurers anyway so u would have to find a company that will accept NCB that is 3 yrs old. If you took out the policy for about 2 months maybe, they would then send you a letter, but you would be liable for any cancellation charges the company charge for cancelling mid term.
