Misinformed about photo ID requirements within UK

I recently misplaced my photo ID while on holiday in Northern Ireland. This led to a bit of a panic because I was due to fly back to England the following day. I phoned Flybe to ask if it would be possible to travel with them without my photo ID. I was told that i wouldn't be able to fly without photo ID. So I booked an alternative flight with BA who do not require photographic ID to travel within the UK (as it is not a legal requirement).
As I had been automatically checked in for my Flybe flight, when I arrived at the airport I decided to tell the check in person that I wouldn't be boarding the flight. When I explained why I wouldn't be travelling with Flybe, I was very surprised to be told that of course I could fly using my credit card as ID.
I have complained to Flybe on a number of occasions but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. The various people I have been put in contact with just keep saying that photographic ID is a requirement and that it isn't their responsibility to reimburse me for the BA flight. But they don't seem to grasp that the only reason I booked the BA flight is because they told me I couldn't fly with them, which in fact wasn't the case.

Sorry if this has been a bit rambling, it's my first post.

Basically I just want to find out what are my rights :)
