Symphony for two copper pipes and a U-bend

Our toilet (upstairs bathroom with an over-bath shower in a 1920s semi) has recently started making a god-awful groaning noise when flushed. DH thinks it's air in the plumbing system somewhere caused by the loo being flushed while the shower's running so has been trying bleeding the radiators to try and flush out any bubbles but so far to no avail and I'd be grateful to know has anyone else had this and identified a definite cause? I'd quite like to know if this is the first symptom of some catastrophic mechanical problem!
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...

Your toilet, shower, bath plumbing is totally separate from radiator plumbing and bleeding rads will have no effect

In my experience, a groaning flushed toilet usually means a worn ball valve diaphragm.

You can pick these up for pennies so I would try this first

Thanks, I'll see if the local hardware/homeware/everything shop sells them :)

DH would like to know if that would also cause vibration in the pipes as he can now feel this under the floor when the loo flushes (it's possible this was present before but we didn't pick up on it because it wasn't accompanied by the 'tormented souls' noise)?

Yes - vibrations in the valve will travel back along the pipe and under your floorboards,... Unless you have a poltergeist ;)

    HTH

  • So if we replace the valve and still hear the noise we need to go looking for an old priest and a young priest? :D

LOL - they're probably easier to get hold of than a plumber is to change a ball valve ;)
