From Carlisle, you aren't too far from the Lake District. 34 minutes and £13 return on the train to Oxenholme for the Lake District. The famous Gretna Green is also just a 9 minute train journey away and a fiver return. Newcastle is an hour and a half and 17 quid return, and the MetroCentre is an hour and 15 away for the same price return. :)

Thanks :) The Famous Gretra Green, is that a nice trip and does that go over that nice bridge lol, I herd about the settle but wasnt aware of what is was and when I searched its steam trains that are like £700 each lol. We do have a car but fancyed a nice train trip that will have a nice scenery route and not too pricey. Also would you recomend the castle or hadrians wall maybe? we are going to keswick for a day out cycling, walk, pedel boat and food but have a spare day to use as well as the mornign before we check in at 2pm so was thinking of something to near near carlise.

    thanks

You can get a trip down the Settle line on the normal service trains for much less than £700. To be honest whilst I love steam trains, once you are on them its still a carriage with wheels and windows etc. The famous viaduct on the line is at Ribblehead. There is a station there (although not much else as its very bleak) and its quite possible to get off the train there, have a walk round under the bridge and then catch the train back to Carlisle. Train takes about an hour and a half each way and you can get returns from just over £20 per person. More info here - http://www.settle-carlisle.co.uk/explore-the-line/stations/ribblehead/

Gretna Green is a lovely trip but I was last there over 15 years ago so I can't remember the exact ins and outs of it unfortunately! I used to live opposite Carlisle Castle (Many a time my lie in- oops sorry I meant revision ;)) was interrupted by them shooting the big guns or doing some sort of display! It's lovely when it's lit up at night as well. I had my driving lessons in the castle car park :D I haven't been to Hadrians Wall since I was a child (or a bairn as we say in that neck of the woods :D) so can't comment too much on that but it was nice enough from the little I remember.
