I've just found out that the 'Thursday' 24 postal workers strike starts at 7pm this evening - so it's really a strike on Friday!
I'm annoyed because I assumed that the disruption would be today - not tommorrow!
I sold a couple of items yesterday with next day delivery but didn't post them because I thought they wouldn't get delivered today and I didn't want them hanging around in the system. I got the OK from both buyers to post on Friday (the day after the Thursday strike!) so they would get them on Saturday. Now it seems that if I post them tommorrow they wont get them until Monday
I assume that if I post them by Special Delivery today that they should still be delivered on Saturday?

No, not guaranteed but in my experience as long as its not a business address then the vast majority will be delivered Saturday.
Next week is a two day strike (Thursday and Friday)!!
Don't worry about it, just send an email to your buyers reminding them that their items will be delayed.0 -
From the Royal Mail site -
What does it mean for our customers- Access to Royal Mail services is available on strike days - but limited to a single collection from Post Boxes outside of Post Offices and the Post Offices not affected by strike action. Collections may be earlier than the normal advertised times
- Please bring planned mailings forward, where possible, to avoid strike days
- We will attempt to deliver Special Delivery items - but we cannot guarantee delivery and so the money-back guarantee will be suspended for items posted on Thursday July 12th and Friday July 13th. In addition the Saturday Guarantee will also be suspended for Special Delivery items posted on Friday 13th July
- Parcelforce Worldwide's guaranteed services will remain unaffected
- Royal Mail's Branch Direct, Sameday and Door to Door services remain unaffected
- All other mail services will be subject to delay

I don't know if it's the same during a strike but special delivery is not a guaranteed service for Saturday delivery although in my experience most are delivered Saturday. If you want to guarantee delivery for saturday you have to pay extra I think.
Taken from Royal Mail website...
You can use Special Delivery™ Next Day from Monday to Friday, except bank holidays or public holidays. If you need your item sent over the weekend, you can also arrange a guaranteed Saturday delivery.
It might be worth checking with the post office today to see what they say?

postal staff have been instructed to advise that items spent special delivery will not be guaranteed to arrive within the usual times. Depending on what staff you get, they may try and refuse to let you use SD as a result. What is likely to happen is that SD items will be delivered by management. Though the issue is if items are posted on the friday there is a good possibility that they will not be collected from the post office. Post offices are only likely to have one collection and this is likely to take place well before the usual last collection.
With so many managers able to do the jobs of normal posties it does make you wonder why there are so many of them and what they do the rest of the time!Do You Twitter?

i was going to post something before this morning but as the strike was 12th i thought theres no point in rushing before work and i'll just post it tomorrow when i'm actually off and will have plenty of time to.
now i may as well leave it until monday...meaning the item i sold tues, thats on a 2 day dispatch wont get to the buyer for over a week
(this is standard postage not next day)0 -
The person in front of me in the PO queue this morning was told that special delivery may arrive Saturday but is actually guaranteed to arrive on Monday now.
Also, there is a 'Crown Post Office' strike of two half days in the next week, they had a note for their records but were not supposed to put up official notification yet.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
