I want to find a company in west of scotland who can transfer old reel to reel family recordings to disc.
I have found a few on the web in glasgow but as they are precious I want to take them to a reputable company. Any recomendations?

Why not do it yourself?
Audacity is the generally recommended way to go.

Thanks unable to link a reel to reel tape recorder to computer0

Does the reel to reel not have a headphone socket? Connect that to your computers line in.
Something like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5mm-Stereo-Jack-Audio-Headphone-Aux-Plug-Auxiliary-Cable-0-5M-1M-2-5M-3M-10M-/310972582841?pt=UK_Musical_Cables_Leads_Connectors&var=&hash=item4867690bb9
Combined with something like this if the r2r has one of the big old headphone jacks

No comments on quality or the suppliers, this is just what popped up first on a search.0 -
What model of reel-to-reel is it? And what brand of tape(s)?
When did you last play these recordings?0 -
As cookie says, if the Reel to Reel has any form of output, we can get it into a computer, or amplifier, or Minidisk recorder, or whatever. Phono? 5 pin DIN? What are we dealing with? Once you're connected up, hit play, record and sit back. You can then edit later. Audicity is the free way to go on Windows and Mac.Thanks unable to link a reel to reel tape recorder to computer0 -
If you don't have the original reel to reel that it was recorded on then it might be better to go to a specialist who can try a variety of machines in order to match the tape to the machine.
Even if you still have the old reel to reel, if it hasn't been used for a few years it may well need some attention before it will work as it should.
All the places that I know that offer this service are in the southern half of England so I can't really help much unless you want to post the tapes.0 -

most helpful and strangely enough I was in a photographic shop this morning and they had leaflets about doing this and they use them regularly so will try them.0 -
Whatever you do, don't leave ALL the tapes in the hands of anyone else.
Accidents happen, and if one does, you want to lose only one tape, rather than them all.
Do you still have the reel machine they were recorded on? What were they recorded on, if not?0
