Which council to apply for HB?

This is a very silly question but i can't work out the answer!

My friend is going back to Uni and able to apply for housing benefit but which council does she apply to? The council where she lives now or the council area she is moving to? They are neighbouring counties and where she is moving to is in the same location as the Uni.

Thanks!

As a student you cannot get housing benefit in your own name unless a single parent. Her partner (if she has one) can get it for them both but otherwise she cant

    *speaking from experience*

Also, it'd be the hb ofthe council she plans to live in

You can also claim hb if you're disabled and receive DLA / PIP.

A child leaving care can claim housing benefit.

If your friend puts in a postcode, they will find the Council to claim from.
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

  • Apply at the council for the area she is moving to.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
