Tax Credit Renewal/Son Turning 16

Well, actually he already is 16, but seemed easier to word it like that. He is currently doing his GCSE's, and has a place at college from September. This is dependant on grades, but even if he doesn't get the grades for that he will just to do the next level down (BTEC).
I gave tax credits all this information when I renewed, and gave name of college, course etc. However, on getting paperwork yesterday he is still only on there until 31/8/14, then his element drops off. Obviously they have then divided these payments across the year meaning I am getting around £80 a month less than before (same wages etc etc).
Is that right? Do I have to phone up again in August to confirm with them he will be staying in full time education and give the details again even though I gave them? And presumably, that will then increase the amount per month they'll give me, as they won't have so many months to divide the amount between.
Seems a strange way of doing it, particularly when kids now have to stay in education by law (although I'm aware that if they do an apprenticeship, whilst it is classed as education, you lose tax credits).
