So I have got a new job starting in a couple of months and I am going to end up doing around 50000 miles per annum.

My current car is getting long in the tooth 14yrs old, 250,000 miles, needed welding for this yrs mot which was in april part of me would keep it until something big goes, but its a 2l petrol getting 30mpg (this is good for model on fuelly) currently do 100 motorway miles a day.

I have calculated that at current fuel prices getting 50 mpg form a diesal per annum the difference in fuel could be 3000 alone

I have a max of 4000 but would really like to be closer to 3000 to spend looking for ultra reliability (current car only failed to start twice when I left lights on and only replaced front shocks on top of routine maintenance

Cash tight a oh on maternity leave so thats it moneywise an beford it suggested we cannot move nearer

Absolute musts are cruise control, ac, and fit 3 child seats on back all under 5 so their big seats with isofic and needs a decent boot to carry work stuff been looking at octavia and fabia estates. As you can se high miles dont worry me as long as well maintained and no know timebombs (Or previous owner has sorted them!)

So open to suggestions

Audi A6 1.9 tdi around 2004 year. Old tech. diesel would be my choice with around 100K miles with full history.

Take a look at the mileages they carry, some on autotrader are high 200K miles.

I think the Octavia estate will be hard to beat for your requirements. I think I'd rather a Passat estate as it's a nicer place to be interior trim & comfort wise but you're more likely to get an Octavia in budget. With a 1.9 130PS (I think) you'll easily manage the MPG you're talking about and maybe more if you're sensible and I think that engine is pretty bomb proof, sure others will correct me if not.

Go for the earlier 1.9 tdi engines (2004-2005) and stay away from the autos. If at 100K it hasn't had a new clutch then you can go for a SMF if you get trouble with it.

This is good advice. If you don't have to have an estate, it'd be worth considering the Skoda Superb too with the 1.9TDI. Bulletproof motor, and loads more room.

+1 for the Superb, the Octavia's are a little smaller (A4 sized)

On that score is it worth doing the maths on keeping your old car and getting something as fuel efficient as possible for the work drive (that probably won't fit the family)?
