Comprehensive Car Insurance

Hi
Just trying to find out of there is an insurance company/breakdown cover that will get you home after an accident.
Last weekend my husband crashed our car while 150 miles from home. We were vising family at the time and he was the only one in the car. He was unhurt and the car was removed by the police to a salvage yard. I phoned the insurance company and got that started and I pay extra to get a courtesy car. Basically as it was at a weekend they couldn't get me a car until Monday afternoon and the breakdown cover I had wouldn't help as it was an accident. With the help of family we got two adults, two children and three dogs home on the Sunday but if we had been somewhere else where we didn't know anyone what could I have done? If there a comprehensive insurance/breakdown that would get us home?
Thanks
Sharon

You would be in the same position were you to breakdown and had no breakdown cover.

You phone for a taxi to take you to a station/bus or home

If there is a liable third party then you can reclaim all your reasonable costs back off them

Most breakdown cover will get you home, and charge the cost to your insurance company

I thought Direct Line advertised this, but cannot see a mention of it anymore. I would think it would be expensive to offer. Breakdown policies only cover breakdown, not accidents. RAC as part of their membership offer accident care, but you would be charged for recovery costs, unless RAC could claim back from a responsible third party.

What you probably realise is that breakdown cover offered with Car Insurance is mostly a seperate product and if it is cheaper than what you can get from the breakdown company directly, that the cover may be different.

Cornhill Insurance appear to offer an accident recovery insurance, so you could enquire with them.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

I did speak to the AA earlier in the week who told me after an accident no breakdown company would have helped me and just now I called the RAC and they said they would have got me home. Think going through the T&Cs with a fine tooth comb is required.

ADAC will take you home after an accident.

Ironically the ADAC service in the UK is provided by the AA
  • My car was being repaired while I was due to go away on holiday, so I had to get a taxi to the airport and then back again since they wouldn't let me park the courtesy car there for five weeks. At first they said I should take the bus because it was cheaper, but due to my physical condition (arthritis) it wasn't possible with heavy bags. They paid up, IIRC it was about £100 each way.
