Housing benefit (Non related child moving in)

Hi,

We receive a small amount of housing benefit and council tax support.
My sons girlfriend has moved out of her family home due to mental abuse (social services are involved). She is currently living with her Nan but they don't have the space for her long term.
She is 16 and still at school. She is putting in a claim for income support today when she has a meeting at social services.
My question is will her living with us and her claiming income support have any effect on the amount of housing benefit we receive ?

She will not be classed as a non dependent as she is under 18 and in full time education.

You should notify the council that she is going to be living with you as this may change your Local Housing allowance award as she would be entitled to her own room in the room calculation which may increase your award.

    Thanks for the info.
I will tell the council the same day she moves in.

If estranged from her family for good reason they can.

Would it not be possible for the op to claim child benefits for the girl instead of her claiming income support? wold it be more beneficial?

I.S is approx £57 child benefit only £14.
Her mother is still fraudulently claiming child benefit and tax credits for her.

She is her sons girlfriend the OP might not feel comfortable claiming for her as a child along with her son seeing as they are in a relationship. I don't think I would. Perhaps its better if she claims her own money and the OP charges her rent (leaving her enough for her other needs).

We couldn't claim child tax credits for her because her mother is still receiving child benifit for her.
We won't be charging her rent but do expect her to use her income support when she gets it for the bus to school (£28 per week) and clothing etc.
We are happy to cover her food and packed lunch etc but don't feel we should be paying for her school bus and clothing.

So did you make a claim for her and it was rejected?

If you haven't made a claim then you can even if the mother is still claiming. Tax credits would then make the decision as to who is the main carer.

No we didn't make a claim because we know the mother is claiming and we feel it would be better for her to have her own money.

If social services are involved you may be able to claim an allowance from them.
