Returning of BT Home Hub after termination (contract expired)

Hi all,
We've just migrated our broadband away from BT after being with them for over a year and were therefore out of contract with them.
We've received an email from them today saying:
"We're sorry you no longer need your BT equipment." blah blah blah
but the subject was:
"You need to return your kit"
The kit it's referring to is the BT Home Hub 3 - Black
We are still using the home hub for our new broadband provider... so we do arguably still need it.
My question is, do we _really_ need to return it? The email goes on to say "We'll reuse it or recycle it in a UK centre, which helps us cut down waste and put all the working parts to good use again."
Well that doesn't sound like they need it back?! They will just re-use it. Well that's what we are doing still :-)
So, has anybody else had this and is it really necessary to return the equipment? Don't we own it!? We purchased unlimited broadband and phone from them in March 2013.
We'd rather not return it unless we really have to!?
Thanks
Daniel

If they don't say there is a charge for not returning it then keep it. I suspect they are discharging their legal requirements of offering to scrap it for you (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive). Some providers like VM do want their kit back - VM mostly so it can't be hacked and used for freeloading their services.

Thanks! I just spoke to BT following your message to check this and they said we can keep the equipment if we want, or we can return it, if we want.
So we are keeping it!
Thanks kwikbreaks for the tip!0
