Difficulty opening a joint account (poor credit)

Hi there

My partner and I recently purchased our first home together (back end of last year) however we had to purchase the property in my sole name (due to O'H's poor credit history) - see my other thread in mortgages

We are currently banking through my current account (O/H has a current account but has extremely limited facilities and cannot set up direct debits which is a nightmare!) so all finances have to go through my name ... which means on paper I pay everything and O/H has no real control over our joint finances apart from my honesty

We have applied for a joint current account so that our mortgage, bills etc can be paid out and our wages paid in but were refused (due to O/H's poor credit history)

We don't really need credit however it seems credit checks have to be done to open an account

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to look?
I simply cant believe we just have to like it or lump it

Many thanks in advance

Steven

  • can I ask who your mortgage is with ?

if you are struggling to get a current account, if possible this is where I would be looking first.

What about the bank you currently have your account with ?

You could open a joint basic bank account. (list of providers included in the table)

However, be advised that as soon as you do have a joint bank account, loan or mortgage etc, the credit agencies will link your credit record with that of your partner which could mean that (in some cases) where you can get credit as an individual now, you might not be able to do so afterwards.

Alternatively, your partner could open an account solely in their name - at the very least that would mean they should have access to direct debits etc

Your O/H could consider the Co-op Cashminder account. It comes with Electron card and allows for direct debits and standard orders to be set up. Pretty much anybody can have one.
  • Thanks for your help, we will try the basic bank accounts. Alliance and Leicester incidentally are whom OH already has account with who will only give her very limited banking facilities
