Life after debt

I'm sorry if this post already exists somewhere - I couldn't find it when I looked, but I thought with all the 'negative' talk on the board it might nice to have something positive to encourage people.

So I was wondering, what people have gone on to do once they have become debt free? Savings? Turned your attention to getting fit? Would be nice to hear some stories.

Ha, I didn't expect anyone to say that as the first post but what a great answer.

We only have a mortgage now and are looking at selling up and going to live in our house in North Cyprus. Both kids had left home so we thought last year this is it...... One came back and doesn't seem to have a work ethic that will mean he will be a while here yet!!!!!

Not quite dept free yet. We still have the morgage and conservatory loan to pay off.

When we are dept free, I would like to move to a home with walking distance to the sea front. Then, I have been dreaming that wish for years.

  • I want... this is going to be a looooong list ;)

To buy a house of our own - preferably with as much cash as possible
a convertible version of the car I have now
a holiday every year (aside from the odd weekend staying with friends I've not had one in 6 years!)
A fully functional left leg (not had that for over 10 months)
A healthy savings account balance so this NEVER happens again.

If I have to narrow it down to one thing I'd like to go to New York, all paid for in advance.

Not as long as I thought my list would be and all pipe dreams right now but nothing completely out of reach for a 10/20/30 year plan :)

Maybe we can share plans and highs and lows as we move towards these goals?

I'd love to be able to buy a new car - and to visit family in South Africa again. It's been a good old slog to get through the past four years, but with just over one year remaining I can safely say I will achieve it in the next two!
  • I've paid off the last of the debt last September and now i'm saving for deposit for a house. I'm also building up as many savings pots as I can so that I never fall back into debt in bad times! :)
